Information for Parents of Prospective Members
New Member Education
After joining a fraternity, new members begin a process of personal, fraternal, and academic growth, known as New Member Education. Programming throughout this six to eight week "pledging" period is provided by the individual fraternity, the Interfraternity Council, and the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Leadership.
New Member Educator Training
New Member Educators for each individual fraternity are trained in a Two-Day Seminar, learning Miami University and the North-American Interfraternity Conference regulations and honing their team building and leadership skills.
Leadership Development
New members are given the opportunity to enroll in Foundations and attend the Acropolis Emerging Leaders Program, enabling them to interact with other new members and upperclassmen of many fraternity and sorority chapters.
- Foundations is a six-week leadership development course designed specifically for new members who would like to soon become leaders within their chapters or the larger Greek community.
- Acropolis is a weekend retreat that fosters interactions between members of various chapters and facilitates goal setting for the Greek community.
Sexual Education
New fraternity members are required to attend Sexual Education Seminars that include a realistic perspective of sex-related issues relevant to college students. The presentations are given by a Miami University student organization, Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault.
Alcohol Education
All new members of the Greek community are required to attend the Alcohol Education Presentation by Rick Barnes, a nationally-recognized speaker who specializes in Greek-related alcohol issues.
Scholarship
Study tables are offered through the New Member Education Program of most fraternities. GPA trends are much higher during New Member Education, and Miami’s Greek Average GPA is consistently higher than the non-Greek Average GPA.
Events
New fraternity members are given opportunities to participate in Greek community-wide events throughout the spring semester. Many events are hosted by individual fraternity and sorority chapters, such as Delta Upsilon’s Puddle Pull, Delta Zeta’s Putting on the Hits, and Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash.
