Second-Year Residency Requirement 12.19.2008

Quickly approaching the 2009-2010 school year, the fraternity system at Miami University will be adapting to the new second-year residency requirements.  These rules state that second-year students will live in on-campus housing or in a fraternity house that has qualified for the second-year Fraternity Exemption.  These houses will be minimally "damp," meaning brothers over the age of 21 will be allowed alcohol in the privacy of their own room, and all "common" areas will be dry.  Some houses have chosen to make their house "dry," which means alcohol will not be permitted on the premises.  Also, as part of the exemption, each house will have an upperclassmen designee or a live-in "in-house director" to ensure that the "2nd year curriculum" is successfully delivered.

The following fraternities have met these requirements and will be able to house the 2nd-year students that they accept through recruitment this January:

ACACIA, Alpha Delta Phi, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Beta Theta Pi, Chi Phi, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Tau, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Pi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Theta Chi

The students that choose to live in one of these fraternity houses will need to meet the following requirements:

  • 2.6 cumulative grade point average (by the end of Spring 2009)
  • No Code 1 violations through the university (reviewed case-by-case)

Lastly, there are other fraternities to join if you would prefer to live on-campus or do not meet the above requirements. These are the following:

Alpha Sigma Phi (On-campus fraternity corridor), Chi Psi (On-campus fraternity corridor pending), Delta Tau Delta (On-campus fraternity corridor), Lambda Chi Alpha (On-campus fraternity corridor), Alpha Phi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, and Sigma Tau Gamma

("On-campus fraternity corridors" are exclusive hallways in 2nd-year residence halls provided by the university for fraternities that do not have chapter houses, so their 2nd-year members may live communally).
